  1. 1858-1923. British Conservative politician,
  2. born in New Brunswick, Canada. He made a
  3. fortune in Scotland as a banker and
  4. iron-merchant, and entered Parliament 1900.
  5. Elected leader of the opposition 1911, he
  6. became colonial secretary in Asquith's
  7. coalition government 1915-16, chancellor of
  8. the Exchequer 1916-19, and Lord Privy Seal
  9. 1919-21 in Lloyd George's coalition. He
  10. formed a Conservative Cabinet 1922, but
  11. resigned on health grounds.
